SOUTH SUDAN: Kiir And Machar Sign Peace Deal

Published On January 22, 2015 | News

President Salva Kiir Mayardit and rebel leader Riek Machar signed a pact in the northern Tanzanian city of Arusha to bring together the rival camps of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

The leaders of South Sudan’s warring factions on Wednesday agreed to a political deal designed to boost efforts to end their year-old civil war, diplomats said. The talks were hosted by Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, with leaders of neighboring nations also flying in to ensure the arch-rivals signed.”The parties reaffirmed their commitment to return to South Sudan as one family and embark on building their beloved nation for the benefit of the people of South Sudan irrespective of their original background,” read the Arusha communiqué released by Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party after the signing ceremony.

The talks in Tanzania were a parallel effort to stop-start peace negotiations brokered by the east African regional bloc IGAD in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. Another round of IGAD talks are due on the sidelines of an African Union summit in Addis Ababa at the end of January.

Kiir and Machar last met in November in Addis Ababa, where they agreed again to an immediate halt to the war— only for that accord to be shattered in a matter of hours.
